iMovie; how to format for TV viewing?

I was trying to use iMovie to edit a few short MP4 video clips I took with my Android phone. All I wanted was to run a few clips together & cut out unwanted bits, & someone suggested I use iMovie. I clicked 'finalise project' at the end, but the edited clips have finished up in some weird format ending in .rcproject, which don't seem to be readable anywhere else other than in iMovie.

I want to send the final video clips to a family in Africa, so they need to be viewable on a very old TV (i.e. one with a curved screen; really old), via a basic DVD player that is only 2-3 years old. Can anyone advise me how to get these clips into the right format for viewing on an old TV? Would MP4 files work? (& why does iMovie not put them into any sort of useful format..?!). Thanks.
