Q: Touch ID doesn't work after iOS 7.1 Update

After installing iOS 7.1 Touch ID stopped working. When I put my finger on the sensor nothing happens.

I already tried rebooting and switching Touch ID on and off. None of that seemed to work. Is there anyone else experiencing similar problems?

Update: Right now I'm trying to set up a new fingerbrint but it doesnt even start scanning when I put my finger on. It just doesnt do anything. I have a feeling that the sensor might be broken...

clucku, take your 5s to the Apple store. They exchanged mine and the new one is working great. It appears to be some issue with the hardware on some 5s units, something that 7.0 didnt care about, but 7.1 exposed.

AT&T 64gb white 5s here. I have this problem too. The freezer trick worked for me too temporarily.

Thanks samicircle, I was able to get an appointment this evening and get a replacement. I just got my phone in February (Gold, 32GB, White, 5s) The replacement worked in store. Techs didn't know anything about any hardware issues related to the update.

Same problem, updated to 7.1 and now Touch ID on 64GB iPhone 5S is not working.  Touch ID worked perfect before the update.  First reboot after update I used the number key; I shut off phone and Touch ID still did not work still under 7.1.  I then deleted the finger prints saved and Touch ID can not read any finger to create a new Touch ID login.  Touch ID under 7.1 appears completly broken.

I plan on using no login security if Touch ID is not fixed because I only used Touch ID becuase of no effort to unlock my phone and it provided security; I'm not going to use a number password if Touch ID doesn't work.

I'm sure the thief who steals your phone will be forever grateful. Your credit card issuers will not be that happy when they have to deal with the fraud from your stolen identities.

Why don't you just take it to an Apple store and get it replaced under warranty, as others have done?

Same problem.Did everything i could.. I think we all should let Apple know of this issue.http://www.apple.com/feedback/ tell them the probelm. So when they get too many complains they will surely fix it ASAP with a software update.

Same issue with 1 week old 5s.

Got my new phone Friday - setup both thumbs prints and they worked great right up until I updated to 7.1. Now it takes 3 to 10 touches to register my thumb if it works at all. I have deleted all my prints and re-entered them twice with great pain as it will not register the print most of the time.

This is clearly an update issue and hope they fix it ASAP as it was soo handy to have.

So I had problems but now it is mostly working. Try:

-Cleaning the sensor and your finger with a soft cloth

    -Touch gently to train

-Overtrain: train your chosen finger as two separate "prints"

To me it seems like the sensor is now much more stingy. It wants a perfect match. So having two versions of your print may get past this.

Finally, it strangely just seems to be getting better with time. No idea how that could be. Maybe the software update got everything too hot and it just needs to cool down?

Come on apple. Please fix this quickly. My phone doesn't want to unlock anymore. It worked completely fine before, now the Touch ID doesn't even recognize that I'm trying to open the phone. It just freezes up.

Posted this on another forum, and putting it here to help others as well - My Touch ID stopped working after updating to iOS 7.1. I tried deleting and re-adding but it didn't work until I figured that I ought to try wiping both my iPhone 5S and my fingers with a damp tissue. I had to dampen my fingers repeatedly during the process of re-adding my fingerprints. And now the fingerprint recognition is faster than ever! I hope this helps others who may have the same problem.

This seems to be a thing of flawed hardware - i was at the Apple store yesterday and the guy just tried some scanns and swappt my phone for a new one - without any hesitations. i strongly propose to get phones with this issue replaced!
