TOC Question

I was trying to make a table of contents for my document and everything was going fine.

However, I decided to get fancy with my headers and put them inside a table with a tinted background. But once I did this, Pages removed these headers from the TOC just because they are in the table. They still have the same style, and when I copy and paste them out of the table it they show up in the TOC again.

Is there a way to add a tinted background across a portion of a page with text over it and still have Pages put that header text in the TOC?

SnakEyez,

yes it is. Go to Text inspector, choose the More tab and mark "Paragraph fill" at the end of the tab. You can then choose a color from Color picker.

That is neat, but it isn't what I was looking for. That only allows colors, not images.

Is there a reason why it won't pick up the paragraph style if I put it in the table? Is this a bug?

It depends on your point of view. Maybe Apple's point of view is this: Tables are objects in Pages, as are shapes. Headings are structural elements of a document. You can add text to objects and you can format this text to appear like heading, but text of an object simply cannot be used as a structural element.

So, actually you cannot use headings in tables.

You could add images to the final version of your text: add a shape containing your image to the header line. Set the shape to "Fixed on page" in Wrap inspector and move the object to the background (Arrange/Send to Back).

Additionally, you could send feedback to Apple to request the feature you want.
