External DVD Drive

Alright, my DVD drive broke on my eMac and I need to do an erase and install. I have an external DVD drive, but it's USB so it's no-go from there. If I copy the disc off of the drive and create a mountable disc on my computer, would it be possible to install from that?

No. You need to boot either from an external hard drive or from an external bootable DVD drive. You can purchase a Firewire enclosure and put the drive from the USB enclosure into the Firewire enclosure. If the DVD drive is bootable you should then be able to use it as a startup device. Alternatively, replace the broken one in your eMac.

If you have another computer with Firewire you could connect the two and put the eMac into Target Disk Mode.
