Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

I just had another call with the Apple Support. Although very friendly she couldn't help. She said it seems to be a hardware related problem (!!), because an update should solve problems and not make new ones. The fact that it worked under 7.0.6 but not after the update to 7.1 make her even more serious about the hardware problem. I should try another clean install and figure out if the personal hotspots works before I install the backup. If this will not work I should bring the phone to an Apple Partner to repair it!

    "N'importe quoi"

An update CAN INTRODUCE NEW BUGS.

Any developper CAN tell you that and it's already append for iOS.

Clean install or repair will not solve this issue (or Apple will have to recall a lot of iPhones)

It's definitively a software issue introduced by iOS 7.1 and it should be solved by an update 7.1.1 (soon I hope)

Just a remark: don't trust all apple support people, as many call center agent, they just have a short training on Apple products, and they follow script to answer to your request.

In most cases they can help you, but for this, only level 3 (iOS developper) support can solve it.

And level 3 is not reachable by end users.

    Hello again,

    Apple Service just contact me,

    they follow the file ...

I told them that I'd like to take an official Apple position (the problem must be known up there now.)

What is Apple wants to offer a bonus to its official partners, we are free to change operator or phone.

Either Apple will provide a fix and that should happen to such dates.

According to the person in line, Apple's policy is not to tell their client of change operators ...

But it is time to react ...

Same problem on a 16GB iPhone4 with Wind carrier (Italy): updated to iOs 7.1 with iTunes and tethering stopped working (yes, it was perfectly functional on previous versions).

That's very frustrating from Apple, i still remember the 3-months FaceTime blackout a few months ago for iphone4 users, now this...

If i go to Settings->Cellular the "Personal Hotspot" voice keeps spinning and spinning and i can't access that setting page

My gf with an iPhone4S and same carrier and iOs version is NOT experiencing this problem!

    ++++++++++++++++

This is the first time I've posted to Apple Discussions.  If you are having the same problem as listed above (and that I am having) - i.e. tethering has stopped working since you upgraded from iOS 7 to iOS 7.1 - then you should add a comment!!!!  Don't just read this and do nothing --- every comment adds weight.

I've already spent about 3 x 20 minutes on the phone to my mobile provider (Three UK) trying to resolve this problem, when it appears the fault lies with Apple's poor testing of this release of iOS.  What a waste of my time.

The lack of a clear, rapid response to user comments shows me that Apple is not what it used to be.  The only reason for the lack of a statement from Apple is that they are scared of bad press.  There has been error after error from Apple lately.

Unless there is a fix in the next couple of days I will never buy Apple again......

    I own an iPhone 5s

    two Macbook Pros

    Mac Mini

    iPad

    iPod shuffle

.... and I will tell all my geeky friends that Apple truly appears to have gone down the toilet.

***  Every UPGRADE these days appears to be an ill-considered DOWNGRADE ***

    *** Users are ignored ***

    *** It's your last chance Apple!! ***

No hotspot here either.  No internet data at all.  I reset network settings trying to fix the lack of internet and now hotspot disappeared. Spinning wheel keeps thinking.

iPhone 4 in Australia with major carrier Telstra.

    Please fix, Apple.

Also, why are the upgrades so HUGE!!  152MB is massive on my 16GB.

After installing 7.1 I noticed that personal hotspot was no longer visible in the settings options. However if you go into Mobile and select Personal Hotspot then you can turn hotspot on. It will then become available in the main page of settings.

Have a go and see if it works on your iPhone ...

I'm lucky because I heard about this problem before upgrading to 7.1.

So I still have tethering with iOS 7.0.4.

But I'm still very upset because of the lags and craps of 7.0.4 and I can't upgrade because of this ridiculous issue.

I'm an electronic engineer and I face every day with firmware bugs, I know that is very common to make such mistakes, but the lack of statements by Apple and the amount of time they are taking to solve the issue makes me thinking they're don't bother at all of their old clients.

Doing this you're losing your only competitive advantage left Apple: superior costumer care.

Said that, I think that my next phone will be an Android one.

I think apple is in the position of the dilemma, it will be embarrassing for apple if it becomes the topic of news coverage, on one side they just launched the newest os, on the other hand the new os less than perfect turns even worse for personal hotspot in the iphone 4. is that almost 2 weeks there is no official information  from apple, I think this is a serious problem that is not deal with seriously by apple. Apple mentions that iPhone 4 users will enjoy improved responsiveness and performance. I think apple has lied, I find apple's performance from day to day are increasingly dropping, disappointing in the midst of an increasingly rigorous competition era. I hope there is a media that raised this topic became news, because this incident has disturbing our activities in the works using the hotspot.
