Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I haven't read all the replies, ( sorry no time for that at this moment ) just have to share my experience. I have two IOS devices... Iphone 4 and Ipad 4, both factory unlocked, so Need to set in the APN settings manually.

Iphone 4 with a carrier what is not an Oficial Apple products supporter ( Movilnet )

Ipad 4 with a carrier what is an Apple products supporter, so allows the Personal Hotspost feature at least on  Iphones sold by them, when inserting the SIM card ( Movistar ). However since my Ipad is factory unlocked, I have to set it manually as stated like on the Iphone ( dunno if is in that way in USA with Ipads too like with phones )

NO ONE of my devices keep saved the Personal Hotspot.

My problem is I use A LOT this feature so I need a FAST FIX ON THIS.

    Writting from Venezuela.

NOTE I never have got any tech support from any of my Carriers, nor Movistar what ACTUALLY SELLS Iphones, or Movilnet which not, so they never told me how to set the personal hotspot. I found how to set it because a Friend of mine with an Iphone 4 too sold through the carrier I think ( Movistar ) got automatically set all the APN settings once SIM card was inserted, and found the personal hotspot APN was the same than the Cellular data APN, so what I only had to do is set same address in both, manually

Dunno if that's the correct way, but it worked perfect untill now!!!

    re-hello,

Apple Service just contact me so I do a handling test to help diagnose where the problem originates.

I still did not get my share, but this shows that they are interested in the problem.

It seems that they intend to make us share access, remains to be seen how long.

Although the service is at too low a level, I made them for my disappointment about the lack of communication officel from Apple

This isn't a bug... Apple disabled the feature and are now being quiet!

Strange way to taking care of customers!

I have a carrier unlocked iphone 4, and my provider is the Italian WIND.

It does not officially support the iphone, since there are no selling agreements between Apple and WIND.

Now, thanks to this thread, I've just noticed that AFTER the 7.1 update the personal hotspot apn will not be saved in the network settings.

This is really frustrating, since it has always been working well until the update.

    Hi,

Same Problem with Simyo (E-Plus) in Germany with my iPhone 4 16GB…

No way to save APN settings with 7.1

I try to restore the phone or clear the network settings, shut down the phone in the APN settings menue after filling it, start without sim and reboot… but still the same problem!

I think there is just a bug in iOS 7.1 because some friends with Nettokom (E-Plus) still have the possibility to use his Hotspot with iOS7.1 (iPhone 4 8GB) "E-Plus" is NOT a supported Carrier!

Another reason, that this is a bug, is: YOU CAN set your APN setting! Why should Apple insert this feature, if they don’t allow it?!?! Makes no sense for me!

So, please release a fix Apple!!!!!!

@All. in this thread it is said several times that this has to do with the carrier.

There were a lot of claims that it before iOS7.1 also worked without the carrier contract.

    Now read this:

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/03/19/apple-cracks-down-on-personal-hotspot- abuse-with-ios-71-update

    and it explains everything.

IF this article on appleinsider is true, then I am very disappointed with apple, that would be a very shameful approach to their faithful customers, VERY SHAMEFUL!

    @Lex

This article was already discussed on page 15&16!

TS has already written an email to AppleInsider because this article has no sources!

I'm using E-Plus (MedionMobile /Germany) and in the comments of this article (http://www.maclife.de/iphone-ipod/software/ios-71-persoenlicher-hotspot-laesst-s ich-nicht-laenger-austricksen#commentstart) (german, sry) someone wrote that he has no issues with the same carrier, BUT he is using a 4S

So this tells me that not my carrier is the issue, but my iPhone model, which means iOS 7.1 is defenitifly buggy in this case! It's absolutely Apples fault!

Read the article.  This was an unintended workaround that as being exploited.

This was to fix unauthorized tethering.  In other words, the people that legitimately had this removed were the ones that weren't supposed to have it at all in the first place.

My carrier does support tethering and that option is included in my curent plan,, reported that problem to apple (just like a lot of people here) but no answer so far. Why apple removes this option if my carrier supports it?

    @LexSchellings

When your cited article explains EVERYTHING, please tell me why it is still possible to use Personal Hotspot with an iPad 3 and an iPad mini, but not on my iPhone 4 using the same SIM Card (Carrier is not an Apple Partner - not on the list). All devices are updated to iOS 7.1.

I think it's more than fair that Apple stopped illegal tethering for Apple Partners (on the list) - but it is not ok to stop tethering for ALL other carriers, despite they are allowing it or not.
