Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

 

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

Finally(better late than never) Apple published iOS 7.1.1 which fixes our issue. I also upgraded and managed to tether my internet. Anyway I feel very sorry for those who were affected by this issue(because they need it for their job and/or studies) and I unterstand their reaction. But keep in mind that at least they fixed it, and we shouldn't blame Apple for unreal things(like they did it on purpose, even if any evidence says it was a bug). Keep using our iphones until we can

    I agree, this is an address for customer complaints.
    For me the case is clear :

    - apple support denies it is a bug

    - either the carrier (Base) has an agreement with Apple under which Apple has blocked the feature and then BASE has changed the terms of our agreement. In this case I will sue BASE

    - either Apple cannot show this agreement and they blocked Personal Hotspot by their own initiative. In that case Apple has disabled a feature of the iPhone and iOS that was advertised as a standard feature of the iPhone and iOS at the moment I bought the iPhone. This is a breach of contract by Apple. In this case I will sue Apple unless they either restore the service or pay for the damages caused by their action.

    Salve,

    a casa abbiamo n,1 iphone 4, n,1 iphone 4s, n,1 ipad2 - n,1 ipad mini, tutti con il gestore Wind italia

    aggiornando a ios 7.1 abbiamo perso la possibilità di utilizzare la funzione hot spot.

    Non conosco quali siano i motivi di questa mal-funzione, ma chiedo che venga risolta al più presto e ripristinato il funzionamento dell'hotspot. Se questa fosse una idea malsana di apple, per qualunque suo motivo, credo che sia la goccia che farà traboccare il vaso e mio malgrado dovrò cedere alle tentazioni di altri device con altri sistemi operativi.

    Android ci sta facendo l'occhiolino...

    Same prob here.. Iphone 5, swedish Telia, Macbook Air mid 2012, OSX 10.9.2. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If I hammer on and of it works after a while Maybe...

    I bought a sim card from a different carrier (3 italy) which is on this official list of carriers:

    I activated the sim card and I CAN ACTUALLY MODIFY AND SAVE information on personal hotspot!

    As indicated on the tre.it website I changed APN values to tre.it and hotspot to tre.it again.

    Went back to settings page and changes were SAVED!

    Connected hotspot, tried to connect an ipad, everything working!

     

    In the last two weeks I have contactes apple several times, no explanation; Wind(my carrier) didn't even know what I was talking about! Perfect! If they don't even know

    What an hotspot is, I just change carrier, can't waste time.

    So that's it, expense: €10. Same plan, same money.

    Different carrier!

     

    Still sure is a bug if I can still modify settings with my Iphone4 IOs 7.1

    Still this is not a good move from Apple!

    Since darkstarpz's comment was deleted meanwhile, my comment won't be too useful but I wanted to point out, that this protocol is Apple-standard.

    If been in a chat-session with them twice (German & US Support) both times with Stanislavs(darkstarpz) result = no result.

    I think the support stuff we are chating with is not allowed to tell users that there are bugs, even if they might think so too. They always tell users to move on to the carrier. My chat partner told me, that every carrier has to implement its own part of the iOS update. This was his argument why Apple isn't responsibly for that. But why should my carrier (Eplus/Medionmobile) do a mistake on an iPhone 4 firmaware but not on an iPhone 4s firmware?!

     

    PS: The german support guy had an iPhone 4 as well and after my explanations he decided to to the update live with me.

    Unfortunattly his carrier was Telekom (=Tmobile), which is an Apple partner, so his Hotspot worked Would have been a great experience to make him see my issue...

     

    Keep complaining!

    But this is not fair - if apple change their gsm standart or ip protocol - who will be resposne - my carrier because use world standart??? So if i buy iphone which features includes perssnal hotspot but my carrier is not in partneship with apple and what?? I can't use one of major smart phone function, but all my friends with android OS can ?

    For those who say that this bug has been intentionally created for avoiding the thetering abuse of the non-Apple partner, here you can find the link where WIND, the italian carrier which isn't an Apple partner, teach everybody how to use Personal Hotspot:

    I just contacted Apple Support, they say they are aware of the problem since they are receiving lots of support request for this kind of problematic. The operator was very kind and stated that they (Apple) are trying to work with Wind Italy to troubleshoot this issue.

    I'll tell you on the next days if there are some kind of news.

     

    I suggest you to contact Apple as well.

    Same problem, no hotspot.

    My first Iphone...

    My last if no solution before 1 april.
