Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

Same problem here. iPhone 4 16gb, The Netherlands, Tele2 (virtual carrier using the T-Mobile network). Personal hotspot stopped working after updating. This is really annoying, as I use it with my car's satnav (Live traffic).

My girlfriend also ownes an iPhone 4. Her carrier is T-Mobile and her personal hotspot works flawless.

Hope iOS 7.1.1. wil fix the problem very soon. This situation *****.

    Maybe downgrade to 7.0.6?

According to @SupportiOS the 7.1.1 update should correct this big.

This small issue may not be a threat to you, but i bet that not a single person who are suffering because of your update will neigther buy an iphone nor suggest an iphone to anybody. I am using iphone since so many years and I have also inspired so many people to buy iphone but from today I will not support iphone.  I will never recommend iphone. Apple is very rigid company. They are taking care of carriers only not customers those who are using it.

I am having the same problem with iPhone 4 and iOS 7.1.

My operator is PepePhone, a Spanish Mobile Virtual Network Operator. As an answer to an enquiry about this problem, PepePhone has answered me that they just sell the mobile communication service and that they do not sell mobile phones and hence they do not have any agreement with mobile phone manufacturers.

PepePhone does not say it, but I assume they are not going to sign any agreement with Apple. So, let's be realistic. Either Apple solves the problem or iPhones cannot be used with Mobile Virtual Network Operators anymore.

    Hi bossa,

please don't take my answer as personal..... but I think that your experience actually confirms the problem, doesn't solve it!

I'm happy with my current carrier price and service and don't want to change just because Apple messed-up with their latest iOS update! I'll rather try to switch back to iOS 7.0.x until this will be fixed, btw does anybody know if/how is possible to do that?

    K.

    Hi Kinsem,

Actually, you cannot switch back to a previous iOS version.

Otherwise, may of us would have done that to overcome this blocking bug.

By the way, I am exactly in your same situation: I don't want to change my carrier just because of an issue with iOS.

Yes, it would be great to be able to downgrade back to 7.0.6. But haven't heard of anyone mentionning any possibility. But I would give a lot to be able to do so.

Does anyone have any clue as to whether that @SupportiOS twitter account is anything serious ? And has anybody got any updated information as to if/when we could expect anything ?

The continued silence of Apple on this subject is quite puzzling. And I really wonder if I will be able to reuse Personal Hotspot someday (only one carrier, so not even possible to change SIM card...) Definitely a productivity collapse there.

I did the OTA update on both an iPhone 5S and an iPad Mini Retina and have noticed the issue. In my case tethering still works because settings were inherited from previous OS versions. I think it is nor really a problem with the tethering functionality itself but rather a user interface bug in the Settings app that does not allow saving the setting after modifying a text field. Therefore, I believe changing the APN settings by adding a settings file through online services like www.unlockit.co.nz might work. I have not tried it though.
