Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

This "unofficial carrier's must sign contract with Apple" thing doesn't sound right to me as that hotspot thing affects mostly iPhone 4 users on iOS 7.1. My friend's iPhone 4S for an example can tether internet and he is using the same carrier as I.

Same here. I am unable to set APN for personal hotspot after updating to 7.1. I searched for this issue and found out that it is a glitch in iOS 7.1 update. Apple please solve this problem as I always use personal hotspot to browse internet on my pc.

The same situation, even the same iPhone 4 - one carrier, two different phones! (Life;), Ukraine). And my (MTC a Ukraine) doesn't work:(. The carrier officially doesn't support Apple devices, BUT sells iPads with 3G internet....Apple really had to support their users. Anyway, why they released 7.1 to return iPhone's 4 for life and took away one of its essential feature?????

I have just been talking to the Apple support team in Belgium for half an hour.  They confirmed that there is a "ticket" open within apple for the investigation of the problem, but at the present time they have not found the problem.

I have been promised a further update on the issue on Saturday 05/03/2014.

From the conversation it sounded like this is a "Bug" and not a design change - so Guys n Gals hold on a little longer, there is a small light at the end of the tunnel.

Same problem with Base in Belgium. The Personal Hotspot APN settings refuse to save.

Also, I cannot configure the Voicemail button with Base's number +32486191933. This feature is blocked.

Last but not least, Apple block my 4G/LTE as I am not with their partner provider Mobistar.

I've had enough of Apple and their over-controling attitudes. This will by my last iPhone.

Not that i don't believe you Tony-2010, but i called the apple care service 3 times, everytime the apple care people connected me trough to their supervisor cause 'they' couldn't help me. Yesterday i had the 3 different supervisor and he told me, just like the other 2 that i was the first to talk about this specific problem to them. I find it rather strange that apple care told you there was a ticket made, cause neither one of the supervisors had ever heard of the problem.

Apart from that neither of the 3 supervisors ever gave me the feeling they were taking the problem seriouesly, nor did they confirm me EVER that it was a bug. The cycled around the topic stating that the issue was with the carrier, that the carrier should update it's settings and so on but never i heard the word: it's a bug and it's our fault.

One thing is for sure in my opinion, they are fogging the entire issue so nobody can follow anymore.

Please do communicate on the further update of the ticket they made and please prove me wrong!

Anyway Dr Leiter is right in stating that if the personal hotspot will work again 4g won't cause they block that anyway.

I cannot support a company that does suchs things, anymore, anyway....

I read your mail after I phoned Apple be, so I was surprised at the difference in the answers.  I will keep you up to date.  This is a small issue but has a huge impact on my working ability and productivity.

Same with me. iPhone 4, latest IOS update. Since then personal hotspot is no longer working. I am ePlus customer.

If they dont solve the issue, my next mobile will be a windows 8 ... hehehe, maybe that creates panik at apple :-)

come on apple, i paid 5000 € for apple products in the last 2 years, you dont want to loose this kind of customers because of such a ********.

Here in Bulgaria one of the first and major apple partner - Globul discontinue his contract (they do not sell Apple product anymore) so maybe this situation is allready happend in other country - now everthing makes sense but why the **** Apple do not tell officialy that missing hotspot feature is not a bug - it's new marketing direction!

Interesting thought, but why this "marketing direction" concern only the iPhone 4???? I think it's a bug, because my wife's iPhone 4 had hotspot feature, after sim changing with my phone (for the test) it disappeared! Interesting isn't it?

This issue does not only affect the iPhone 4. I have the same problem on my wife's and kids' iPhone 4S and my iPhone 5. All 5 of these devices got this problem after upgrading to IOS 7.1

How to explain that: two iPhone 4, one iPhone 5s, same carrier and on the one iPhone 4 hotspot doesn't work, other phones work correct? By the way, on the that one it worked too, until I changed sim for a while...

There's a lesson we can all learn from this:

Don't jump in and accept the latest IOS updates. First find out what these updates contain then wait and read the forums to check for new bugs, problems or complaints. When all seems OK, accept to update the IOS.
