Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

    For Defraudao

Ask your support engineer to check following  Repair No: R119231345 in their system.  There they will find an official Apple statement classifying this as a general issue and some hints about how to solve it ;-).

On March 19th I issued a bug report to Apple about this problem and Apple has requested me to send a Console Log of my iPhone reproducing the problem. I have already send the log file. I hope this contributes to the solution of this bug.

The winner is: Apple (and Mobistar)

For my part, I gave up, I went from an official Apple partner.

I do not like their politics, but I love my iPhone.

I think Apple wants to offer a bonus to its partners.

But he can not do legally.

By cons, it is not (legally) responsible for a bug.

Apple is not on this forum it is User to User and Apple do not monitor so you will wait a long time

did you not bother to read the terms when you joined

You miss the point, it's not that we expect apple to post in this forum – we expect them to give any statement at all about this matter. After a month of hundreds of people discussing and in the dark about wether this is a bug or a "feature" and 50,000 visitors being affected with this it can be expected to get an official statement.

Apple definitely has emlpoyees who read the posts. I am pretty sure they know exactly whats going on here. I mean they would be stupid to not do it because it collects an amount of information for them that no money in the world could ever make up for. It tells them what "stupid users" do with their products to reveal bugs they would have never found otherwise.

Also this "called the hotline and they don't know anything" is just what they are told to tell customers before they know exactly what the problem is. That is a common stragedy.

I am so angry about this. My provider allows tethering, but obviously does not have a contract with apple. I changed my provider one month ago, in order to be able to tether with my tablet, and now APPLE locked me out of it. And there is not even a way to downgrade. This is by no chance a bug, apple did this on purpose.

That does it. I am through with apple and their politics.

I'll sell my iPhone and get an Android phone.

This thread was created ONE MONTH ago.

There are more than 500 comments and nearly 55000 views and Apple has not said anything about this problem that iOS 7.1 has created. It is outragious.

Apple, why do you ignore your customers?

I called Apple support in Italy and the guy I spoke with already knew this issue in all details.

He said they are receiving lot of calls from people experiencing this problem using a Wind SIM.

According to him, Apple is investigating the issue trying to understand if it is an iOS 7.1 problem or a carrier problem (I hardly refrained from starting a fight with him on this point...). He said it *may* be fixed in an iOS update.

Meanwhile he suggested the following workaround to try to solve the problem (I didn't try it yet):

    - Back-up the phone

    - Re-initialize the phone temporarily using a SIM from an Apple partner carrier (looking for a friend willing to help...)

         - This shoukd enable the APN saving option

    - Insert your own SIM, restore the back-up and set the APN

We'll see.... meanwhile I think that, in addition to posting here our experience, we should all call Apple support to increase the number of official reports of this BUG!

    I already checked.

    and is correct.

the error only happens with virtual carriers. BUT with the complicity of APPEL: allows them to cancel the service iphone. the reason is obvious: the tethering cause increased data traffic.

We will soon see as carriers begin to charges for tethering. sure!

this maneuver is being done gradually to prevent a rebellion of users ....

Kinsem, I recommend you not to spend your time in trying that workaround...

Rather than that, as you did, it is better anyone has the problem to hilight the issue to Apple customer support with hope of a bug fix in next iOS.
