Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

I have been talking to Apple Support for nearly an hour. After many testing which did not solve the problem and insisting that many other users are facing the same problem, the operator told me to wait because she was going to consult the problem with someone at a higher level in Apple Support. She told me then that Apple was aware of the problem and it was going to be solved soon. Asking when, she told that Apple was aware of this problem for a week or so, and that taking into account that problems like this are usually solved in no more that 15 days, she expects the problem to be solved the following week, but that's no official. Nevertheless, I think it is important you continue calling Apple Support.

For good measure, I have just had a lengthy and frustrating conversation with Apple Support to raise a ticket for this (ref 598915510).

While on the phone, I also had a fruitless conversation to raise two other long-standing issues:

    1. I cannot program my voicemail number for my operator BASE into my phone button. My workaround is to create a contact for voicemail.

    2. Apple are still disabling 4G for customers of non-approved operators. In the case of Belgium, this means Proximus and BASE customers.

Thanks to all that report his experience with Apple Support.

To all other that are writing "**** Apple", "I'm going to android", etc..: you are filling this discussion and our emails with words that have no interest to anyone, please keep these word in your mind, thanks

"We are very sorry that your carrier does not have signed the contract official carrier. Only that ensures the operation of tethering. The solution is to change carrier because it is not an issue that will be resolved with future updates ios.'s not our bug "

NO SOLUTION TO COMPACT SOME THAT CARRIERS AND APPEL.

Is this legal? What do you think?

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think it is legal in Europe. Apple sells hardware, not data-contracts. I believe this is clearly interefers with the free market and competition regulations and should be reported to the appropriate authorities. Perhaps an online p-tition (sorry about the "-", my last posts were deleted by apple 30 mins later) should be raised and sent to the EU or higher authorities (Monopolies Commission ?)

    As I posted before:

EVERYONE - CALL APPLE, RAISE A TICKET, RAISE H-E-L-L IF YOU HAVE TO, BUT MAKE YOURSELF HEARD!!!

I really need my tethering, I am not an apple freak, but I do have an iphone, ipad 3g, Macbook Pro and an IMAC - why, because up until now everything worked just fine. As a senior Microsoft Technology Consultant I don't need to fix all those problems when I get home after a long day in the office. Until now, apple worked just fine.

Same on my iPhone 4, though some of my colleagues' iPhones 4s and 5 are working fine. Since we are all using the same carrier, this definitely rules out any carrier related excuses...

    @Taygeto

Well, not really. It  rules out Iphone 4s and Iphone5 carrier related excuses, but not on Iphone 4 which is where the major part of the problems are being reported. Which carrier is it?

I am writing from Rome in Italy.

Here we have the same problem, as I reported at the beginning of this thread, with the provider WIND.

Well this morning I was in one of the Apple Store in Rome and I have confirmed that Apple is aware of this problem and a fix will be present in an upcoming patch for iOS.

Also I have confirmed what I had noticed about 1 month ago: that the carrier WIND began selling iPhone 5S on its website despite not being a Apple business partner and that, therefore, will be announced soon also WIND as the fourth partner (as TIM , Vodafone and H3G).

So I hope, at least for Italian customers of WIND, the solution will come soon.

    @ philgblau

My carrier is Proximus (in Belgium), which is indeed not Apple's official carrier. Will test with some other colleagues' who have an iPhone 4 after the weekend.

I am ok with the fact that they do not make all new features available on older models of their phones, but taking away a feature that has been available and working for years is quite another matter...
