Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info. I thought the problem was related to virtual carriers but based on your feedback the problem apparently is with carriers that are not Apple partners (which is the case for most virtual carriers).

I find it absolutely unacceptable that Apple has not released any official statement on this so let me disclose how I fixed my issue.

    Iphone 4/7.01/virtual carrier

    1. I opened a support case by phone. If you don't have a valid applecare agreement or your device is out of warranty don't worry, ask for an exception. You won't be charged anything after explaining the issue. My Iphone was 2.5 years old.

    2. After going through all sorts of tests over the phone the support engineer booked an appointment at the next Apple store on my behalf.

    3. Before going to the Apple store I opened another ticket, this time through their chat support in English. They reached the same conclusion. I had to visit an Apple store.

    4. At the Apple store they just inserted another simcard into my device. Hotspot worked, thus it was not a hardware issue.

    5. Solution: They gave me a new Iphone 4 that was still on iOS 7.02 . Obviously without  charge. My problem is gone and I can continue working normally through my personal hotspot.

My case is anotated in the global support system and any support engineer has access to it. I made sure the the final conclusion and my Repair No. are now linked to the support cases I opened.

    My support cases:

    English: 595574976

    Spanish: 595415048

    Repair No.

    R119231345

    Hope this helps!

    @Defraudao

I don't know about you, but I got mine replaced with a new iPhone4  with iOS7.02 which now works perfectly with Simyo.

Luckily, I had a spare phone and didn't keep it up to date, so it's running iOS 6.  Tethers beautifully. Works fine. Does everything I want it to do.

I live in Vietnam and London and travel constantly. I paid full price for a phone I could switch SIMS in. My carriers in both countries allows tethering and gave me the settings. But iOS 7.1 would not save them.

It should concern Apple that, having pulled this stunt with iOS7.1, iPhone owners will be very, very hesitant to update their operating system in the future for fear they will find that Apple has clawed back yet some other utility they have grown to depend on.

Ultimately, it will inhibit their ability to implement new technology and keep ahead of their competitors.

I do hope their 'special relationship' with US telephony providers is worth what they've done to their reputation as innovators.

We are hostage to this situation: apple is extorting "unofficial" carriers to sign agreements (money, obviously), or does not support tethering. Simply.

The question is: how much money means changing the bad image that is giving APPEL?

On March 19th I issued a bug report about this problem caused by iOS7 and it has now been closed by Apple saying it is a duplicated bug report. Not any other word, no explanation or status of the bug.
