Macbook Pro - WiFi turns OFF and won't turn back ON

Hello,
this is my first time posting something on this forum; I will be as detailed as possible. I bought a Macbook Pro back in 2011 and It came with Lion OS. Last year I upgraded it to Mavericks and so far it has been a nice experience. However, in the past week I have experienced a very strange and irrating problem with my macbook. While doing work all of the sudden the WiFi would turn off and lose all connection to the web. I attempted to turn it back ON by clicking on the wifi signal icon but something weird occured, it was still 'ON' according to my mac and the only option available was to actually turn it OFF, so i clicked on it and the icon would go empty with no curvy lines (i attached a picture). Then i clicked again on the icon to turn it back on, however, as was doomed to remain in this state cause no matter what I tried.. the wifi will remain off even after clicking on the 'turn wifi on' option multiple times. I tried going to the assist me option under network preferences and I obtained multiple results with no fix. I tried sending my mac to sleep though at first seemed to fix the problem.. the wifi inmediately went back to being off and wont catch a signal. The only thing that fixes this is a fresh restart which is annoying and unacceptable...this is really annoying and I need a solution asap because this problem is become very frequent (once every 2 hours)... any help will be appreciated it.

I attached 2 pictures and the console log when this happened.

1. A picture of my assist me window before i sent it to sleep, shows the WiFi on the left with the 'Failed' (which confuses me). it also shows the wifi icon empty ( like it was off) but the computer shows as if it was on and would ask you to turn it off... weird?

A second picture after I sent my mac to sleep. Though it seems like there was no wifi signal available, the router was on and literally next to my mac...but my machine wont catch up the signal. (other devices were connected to the wifi and have no problem with it).

Hello, I'm truly sorry for the situation that you are in right now. I'm actually having the same problems with you with my macbook pro 2012. When I first bought it, I never had any issues with it until a few days ago when I'm noticing that my mac randomly disconnect me from the internet and it doesn't let me reconnect. I've kept in restarting my mac over and over and it kind of worked at first but it kept on doing the same thing. However I did managed to fix the problem now. I think it has something to do with the WiFi card in that is probably damaged which causes our Macs to randomly disconnect from the internet. Some people say the only way to fix this is by replacing the WiFi card and installing a new one, but I think its risky and I have no idea how much it is to do this.

So the way I did it to fix the problem is by buying a usb wireless network adapter and you can find those on some retail stores, especially Amazon for around ten dollars. And it did helped for me. I'm actually been able to connect to the internet with no problems with the adapter connected and I really didn't have to worry about my mac disconnecting from the internet because I'm essentially using the WiFi from the usb adapter, but not on the mac itself. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts. Very helpful. Sorry, I cannot read "logs." My eyes just glass over on those things. Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.

I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled." Have you tried the "Automatic" setting? Run the diagnostic test? Results?

Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number. Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem. unplug it for about 10 seconds. Plug it back in. Do the same for Apple’s routers. Wait for everything to reboot.

System Preferences>Network

Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Unfortunately i have no access to my router since i mostly spend time at school.. but i highly doubt that is the source of the trouble... i am not the only one with a 2011 macbook pro with maverick os..yet i seem to be the only one with this problem.. back at home i did play arond with my router... and still the results was the same. I have a desktop and two other devices that flawlessly connect to it.. but my macbook fails at detecting any signal from it.. like shown in the picture above.. losing hope.

I wish I could offer help, but I'm just here to say I'm in the same boat and have been for about 1 month… I'm also on a Macbook Pro, albeit a different model than the OP.

2 questions to others who have this issue:

  1. How much RAM do you have installed? Did you by any chance recently increase your RAM and/or does your unit have more RAM than what Apple recommands? For me the problems started occuring when I upped my RAM past what Apple states as the limit for my unit (but there were reports that it nevertheless worked). But this could just be a coincidence…
  2. Have you taken your unit to a Genius bar and asked them about it? Perhaps it's a hardware failure…

Curious to hear back. I've subscribed to this thread. Good luck to us!

Words cannot describe how angry this problem makes me. How can world's largest tech company not been able to fix their biggest bug for this many months now?!?!

All these forums are overflowing with the same **** problem: WIFI DOESN'T CONNECT AFTER COMING BACK FROM SLEEP ON MAVERICKS.

How many thousands of people have to post the same godddamn problem for how long?

And no, disconnecting Bluetooth doesn't help (even if it did, its not an acceptable solution). I took my MacBook Air to Apple store twice already and they cannot help either.

aaaAAAAaAaaAAaaarrrrghhh, I'm going to go insane from this problem.

I miss Steve.. he wouldn't let something like this go on for this long. Can a half a trillion dollar company pay attention to its own support forums or at least google "wifi-not-connecting-after-sleep-mavericks" and realize what incompetent company you have become?!

Jun 11, 2014 12:06 AM in response to gsaldana10

This is the first thread I've found that perfectly describes my own problem... as of a week or so ago, my wifi randomly disconnects for no reason but appears to have full bars in the menu bar. After a while sometimes it will say that airport hasn't been configured, but regardless it will not let me turn wifi on again. The only thing that will get it running again is to restart my computer. I've tried every location/PRAM reset/key chain fix I've found, but to no avail.

I might try reinstalling Mavericks just for a last effort, but might be looking into a new wifi card myself.

Jan 31, 2016 6:29 AM in response to nfgsmith

Same issue for me. I did everything you can think of except change the airport cable inside my Mac. Replacing the airport/bluetooth card made no difference for me. I deleted all the pertinent system configuration files. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM. The only thing that works temporarily is to restart the mac but it only works for a few seconds or up to a few minutes. 😟

At this point the wifi shows as being turned off and no attempt to turn it on works. I have read most of the forums and blogs about troubleshooting wifi issues with Mac and still can't get wifi to work.

The first time this issue occurred was a week ago and I was still using Yosemite. Upgrading didn't help but perhaps the next step is a complete reinstallation.

One issue I was having for quite a while was that the hardware was not found. Replacing a system configuration file that I had saved before deleting and restarting the computer "as per recommendation" corrected this.

I just ordered a USB wifi adapter for a temporary fix.

Latest version of El Capitan installed 10.11.3 at the time of this post on a 15" MacBook Pro mid 2012

Jun 8, 2016 1:48 AM in response to TheFiddlerman

I had the same wifi issue from past 5 days. My wifi turn off by itself and doesn't turn on. Restarting mac is just a temporary solution but it kept turning off again. Checked most of the forums but nothing worked.
Then I thought to manually install the latest update of El Capitan from https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ww/
It works perfectly fine without losing data. Try it and will work 100%
