Q: 10.9 guest account,  customize bookmarks.

hi ,

I want to setup a machine to be used for guest internet access.

I have configured the account using workgroup manager, however i cannot manage to customize my bookmarks list.

I note in ~/Library/Safari there are default ones there..

is it possible to set a customized list of bookmarks for the guest user account, so that when the user logs out or restarts they are not lost?

thanks

I have never used WorkGroup Manager, but I can tell you that the Guest account wants to leave nothing behind when it is exited.

See this logout message from the Guest account:

I do not believe this is configurable.

Yes this can be done. First create the bookmarks in the admin account in whatever web browser you choose. You will then need access to the admin's user library to retrieve the files needed to make this work. Go to the Go menu and hold down the option key to show the Admin user library. Copy the files needed ( if you are using Safari copy the Safari folder from the Library and the com.apple.Safari.plist from the Library/Preferences folder) and place them in a temp folder in the Shared folder (It is easier to retrieve the files from this folder once logged in as Root.)

You then have to enable the root user in the directory utility found in ~System/Library/CoreServices (It's under the edit menu once the app is open.)

Log out of the Admin account and log in as Root with the password you have assigned (you will see an "Other" login to log in as the root. This was enabled when you enabled the Root user.)

Now navigate to the User template folder ~System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library. This folder allows you to save prefs for any new users you create, including directory users. Now copy the Safari folder to the Library and the com.apple.Safari.plist to the Preferences folder.

Log out and back in to the guest account and the bookmarks should be there.
