New iPad air won't turn and/or charge

Hi all. Have tried charging my new iPad throughout the night and it's still not showing any sign of life. Problem is it was a gift for a family member in Argentina and kind of needing working here as I could really do without having to return the machine in the UK where purchased. Anyone know what can be tried to kick start matters. We have tried rebooting pressing and holding the home and snooze button but nothing. Thanks.
