Dual 800MHz in 733MHz QuickSilver - heatsink

Hello everyone!

I just had a PowerMac G4 QuickSilver 2001 (the original model) with a 733MHz single CPU from a good friend.

I want to upgrade the CPU and I already know that the CPU from the Dual 800MHz Quicksilver will fit and work in my computer, but my question is about the heatsink.

The Dual 800MHz CPU I saw on eBay doesn't come with an heatsink, so: can I use my heatsink from the single 733MHz with the Dual 800MHz or will it overheat? I could put a second 60mm fan attached to the heatsink to improve the airflow, will it be enough cooling?

Hi, it won't fit or work, you do need the DP800 Heatsink, preferably the copper one.

Yes, & my one remaining brain cell makes it diffult to be sure if there was a copper one for the QS, or just the MDDs! 😕

Anyway, the heatsink will have dual "pads" to contact the dual CPUs, & theQS/ DP800 was almost as good a space heater as the DP1.42 GHz MDDs, so more fans will be a good idea. 🙂

I think the copper one was only for MDD or for 3rd party CPU upgrades... But it doesn't really matter :P

I'll buy the Dual 800MHz board anyway because I found it for an amazing price (18,61€ including postage) and later I'll find an heatsink (or build one...). Thank you again!

P.S. If you see any heatsink feel free to link it (will an heatsink from a dual Digital Audio/Sawtooth work?) :)

That last one sure looks like it, as I recall the DA/Sawtooth ones are a whole different size.

Good evening!

I'm writing from my QuickSilver. I haven't upgraded the CPU yet, but I have another question (I'm sorry, but I usually ask a thousand of questions to be sure that I'm doing everything right 😝 ): will the power supply be a problem?

In my Mac there is the 344W one... is it enough?

I also upgraded the graphics card from the stock Nvidia GeForce2 MX to an ATI Radeon 9600 pulled from my G5 (which died unfortunately). I taped the pins 3 and 11 and it works like a charm! Massive upgrade from that stock card.

As BD says, the 344W should be sufficient. It was standard on the 2001 Quicksilver with the dual 800MHz CPU.

I would worry more about the heat created. When I fit a dual processor to a Quicksilver, I fit an Evercool EC6025H12CA fan in place of the standard CPU fan. Cools things down nicely. It's a three wire fan, so you fold the third (blue, I think) wire out of the way. As I recall, you pull the blue wire out of the little white plug (folding it back out of the way) and move the black wire from its initial position to the space left when you pulled the blue wire. This lets you slide the little three wire plug onto the two posts of the motherboard where the original low speed fan went. The new fan will run at full speed (like the original) instead of being a variable speed job, but I haven't had one fail yet. Stare at it for a few minutes to get it all properly arranged in your mind, and it should go smoothly.

If you can't find a proper heatsink, you can try looking for a dual 1GHz CPU (and heatsink) from the 2002 Quicksilver. Interchanges easily.

I sort of prefer a Radeon 9800 or a GeForce 6800GT to the 9600, but anything should be faster than the GeForce2.

Hi Jon!

I already replaced the stock fan (which died about an year ago) with a standard 60mm fan (I don't know the speed though), and that had a 3 pin connector as well :) I could go for the fan you adviced, it' only 5€.

Yesterday, I used the QS for about 2 hours stressing the original 733MHz CPU and when I opened the case, the heatsink wasn't even warm, so I hope the Dual CPU doesn't heat that much.

About the video card, I had that spare Radeon (bought it for 10€ on eBay to replace the FX5200 in the G5) so I modified that one :)

Ok, now I figured out why my CPU was so cool.

The fan I've got at the moment in my QS is a Delta EFB0612HHA, which is very similar to the one you use.

It has a 12V DC voltage (average), a 0.25A rating, it spins at 4800rpm (versus 5000 in your fan) and shifts 21.2CFM (versus 26.5 in your fan), so I think that would be enough even for the Dual 800MHz CPU 🙂

Good morning everyone!

After 3 months, I finally purchased that Dual 800MHz CPU upgrade. It came 3 days ago, I installed it in my QS and... my God. It's a completely different machine now.

That dual processor made a huge difference: the average CPU usage under Tiger went from about 70-80% to 10-20% per processor. Graphics performance improved A LOT as well. Now the dock magnification is completely smooth and even Leopard runs pretty quick!

But guys... that thing heats up. Really. The heatsink really does its job well. I'm thinking of screwing a second fan on the heatsink on the opposite side of the stock one, to improve airflow. I also have a flashed Nvidia GeForce FX5500, which has an awful sounding fan and heats up a lot, so I might replace it with something quieter and cooler (I've got a Sapphire Radeon X800 Pro but I didn't manage to flash it for the PowerMac, I think the X800XT ROM is not compatible with this exact card) to cool down the overall system.
