On iOS, head to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select one of the email accounts you have set up in Mail. Next, go to Account > Advanced and in the Move Discarded Messages Into area, select either Deleted Mailbox or Archive Mailbox.

And for OSX:

On OS X, open the Mail app and go to Mail > Preferences. On the Viewing tab, you can choose either Trash or Archive for Swipe Left To.

"And see". C'mon. What kind of an answer is that? I'm really hoping you don't work for apple. The answer is definitely NOT helpful. There is no such option available on my new iPhone. Is it a special bonus option available only to a few lucky iPhone owners?

The emails I want to trash only go to a mystery archive folder simewhere. Checking in my normal archive folder they are not going there. Where is the mystery archive folder? The big question is why are we no longer allowed to trash emails?

Please, no more "and see " answers. its either there or not. In this case "not."

No, it was not easy to switch to trash. You No, it is not easy. You are an advanced user obviously. Anyone attempting to do this needs to know that is a confusing puzzle that apple has set up for us and it seems they want us normal, non techies to not succeed and have our trashed email go to some mystery archive folder that we can't see. The emails I tried to delete did not go to my archive folder. Where does apple send them? Good luck to everyone trying to figure out that setting to trash their emails. It can be done but it's not easy and a waste of time
