I moved old backups from Time Machine to the trash and then found all the folders (Macintosh HD - System - Library - CoreServices) remain because the 'boot.efi' file in the last is locked, and can't find any way to 'put back' or delete. Would really appreciate any help you have. Many thanks...

I don't know about new OS versions but it used to be holding down the option key while emptying the trash would delete locked items.

Thanks much, Limnos - it's now called the 'Alt' key on my MB Pro - worked like a charm!
I have the same problem with Time Machine Backups in the trash and the boot.efi file is not deleting. I'm on a i5 running OS 10.8.5 and the Option/Alt Empty Trash does not do anything. The file is locked and I'm unable to unlock it.
Lots of possible solutions there. It led me to the free "Trash It!" program which solved my problem.
