Q: Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update.

Am I the only one who seems to be experiencing this? My iphone 5S battery seem to drain much faster than usual, and charge longer. I heard that the new update is supposed to increase battery life, and read comparison threads regarding other iphones that are capable of a much better battery life than mine.

I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so. Is this normal? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I am mostly using 3g, and applications that require more processing such as tumblr (graphics and gifs) as well safari? I'm just worried that my battery may be draining to quick, despite the update which's supposed to make it much better according to many people.

Thanks.

My problem solved after I reset the network settings. I see a full battery since last 8 hours with moderate usage, since I did this.

Before that, the battery died in 10 hours of no usage (left overnight) or 7 hours of moderate usage.

    I'm a Happy soul

I am happy for those folks who get the simple to work..unfortunately there is nothing on this forum I have not tried, and none have worked..new battery still drops like a rock.....must be hardware

I too have tried everything short of resetting my phone as new.  But I can't agree that it is a hardware issue.

Before the update, my phone wouldn't hit the 20% warning until after 12-14 hours with light to moderate use.  After the update, I'm lucky if I can make it 7 hours, and that's just having it on standby.  If I make a call or use data, the battery life plummets.

I know I am not the exception.  There are too many similar accounts of acceptable battery life dropping to the point of rendering the phone unusable away from an outlet after updating.

FYI, i did restore from new...twice..nothing different...it also gets amazingly hot when charging/running a program at the same time.  they other day it actually had the warning pop up saying it need to cool down before using.  Anyway restored from new twice..not a back up...terribly battery life

I noticed if I turn off cellular data, bluetooth, wifi, gps, turn down brightness to minimum, turn off sound and vibrate and use my homephone if I need to make a phone call, I get a little bit better battery life. I get even more if I turn the phone off and only turn it on to check the battery and turn it off right away.

I haven't tried that, but I know it will work. Thanks for the tip...

    Excellent observation

We kind of have noticed the same.

My spouse, who uses the 5S a lot less than I do, has also been complaining about poor battery life. Used some of the same common measures to disable some of the "smart" features, restrict data, networking, locations, etc. Helps a bit, but not enough.

I gave up tracking how poor my 5S battery life is. It is on par with using a 3GS on AT&T in a poor coverage area, and definitely way worse than a 4 & 4S in the same good coverage area on VZW.  Most disappointing to see this battery drain every day, going below 50% twice a day when you actually use the **** thing for a bit. I pretty much have to plug it in when I'm in the car, or at lunch and then at night. The 4 - 4S could last several days, up to a week without touching it. Not so with the 5S. My 5S is guaranteed to have a very short useful battery life of a year or so, at the going number of charge cycles.

And, I guess it'll only get worse when Apple decides to shave another mm off the phone, add more features, etc while never increasing battery capacity.

I was on 7.1.1  and had the same problems. Iphone 5s got hot and was draining in 4 to 5 hours. Restoring from back-up and resetting (pushing home button and on/off switch), did not solve the issue.

What did the trick for me was a restore to factory settings with the 5s connected to iTunes (cable). It first sets up like new iPhone, reloading and installing that latest firmware. This is then followed by a restore of your back-up if you one.

It is like new! All issues solved and it is also more responsive.

Now with all default features switched on it was 100% when I went to sleep and still 94% in the morning.

It appears to me that an update sometimes goes wrong leaving the 5s still working but causing strange behaviour under the hood.

    Hope this helps

the restore seems to work for some but not for a lot of others...i did TWO restores and made sure it was a fresh restore, not from back up...battery still is terrible.

Haven't been here in awhile-glad to see nothing has changed. In one of my postings I mentioned I was going to email Tim Cook and include this message string. Well, I did hear back via email today from their Executive Offices but did not have a chance to call.

Hopefully I can connect to this person to see what they have to say and I'll let everyone know.

In the meantime I'm packing for a 3 week beach vacation with 2 Mophie charge cases and a portable Mophie key chain charger.

    Sad isn't it?

By all means contact that person, and see if you can send him/her an email with a link to this forum thread.

Until a certain level acknowledges it, we're all just talking among ourselves and to geniuses etc who say this is normal etc.

We shouldn't have to turn our premium smartphone into a half of one to make it through a day.

Better firmware and bigger batteries please. My fear is already that the next iphones will be bigger, thinner and have the same stupid little batteries at best; while they keep promoting new abilities and we're all expecting our phones to do more and more.

I did get a call back, they sent via email a diagnostic application which has been installed on my phone. They are calling me back in 24 hours and I believe I have to sync my phone to send them the information. I'll let you know the result as soon as I hear back from them.
