I have the same question but when running on Yosemite. My only 2 choices are "Off" and "Guest User" in my Apple System Preferences, Users and Group. This setting was changed a few days ago in the Oak Brook store when an associate added a guest user to try to solve a problem I had with iMovie '09. I've removed the "Apple" user but can't turn off the log in screen.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion in Yosemite. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

Do a backup.

Quit the application System Preferences.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
