Gap in playback on my iPhone but not iTunes?

I was playing an album earlier today on my iPhone (5s, 7.1) and noticed that between tracks 1 and 2 there was a sizable gap (like 4-5 seconds). Track one normally flows into track two so it was jarring and very noticeable. What's weirder is that when I played those same tracks on iTunes (latest version) on my Mac, there was no gap and it flowed fine. Any idea why this would be happening?

PS: the album in question was downloaded to my device.
