My iMac has a Lacie used for TMachine but now it doesnt appear on desktop, Disk Utility and About This Area. The external power unit and USB cable look good too.
Any idea of the cause (or guess)

Either the drive or the enclosure has probably failed. Maybe you can remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to the computer with an adapter or another enclosure. Maybe it's just time to buy a new back up drive. I would avoid Western Digital externals, they're not very reliable.
I have not returned it to the company yet, but every attempt to get absolutely any action from it has failed. No noise. Does that help?
Yeah...if it's under warranty you should return it....I do believe it's dead.

If you get a SATA USB drive cable kit adapter, you can get the HDD out of the enclosure
& attach the wires (plugs) into the drive to see if you can recover files directly; these kits
usually have their own power supply if to be used with 3.5" HDDs; while there are kits
for 2.5" HDDs that presume port-power is adequate.
Most computer stores have something along this line; be sure to ask of their return policy just in case it doesn't work, or is the wrong kit.
