1. I strongly support Mike's message: Kaspersky and TrusteerRapport must go!

2. And you might also uninstall Rim/Blackberry app, also known as causing problems.

And (in SystemPreferences) Flip4Mac (although no problem in SL), and DivX; If you ever encounter a problem playing an extension that can not be played standard, do not install a preference pane like Flip4Mac or whatever, but use the best player: VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html).

3. did you ever change the hosts file? it should be brought back to its default. An answer please.

4. to be complete you can also get rid of some internet plugins,in /Library/InternetPlugins/ folder delete these:

Flip4Mac, should not be there after uninstalling.

DivX, same

Silverlight: should not be there.

AdobePDFViewer: same.

JavaApplet, Java not installed, so this one can go.

Hi Lex

Thank you for your reply.

I can't find Rim/Blackberry app. Would you point out where to find and delete it please.

I have removed Flip for Mac and DivX.

Is VLC the best way of downloading DVDs into itune to view on ipad?

I don't remember changing the hosts file but may have done so without realising it. How do I check?

Also where do I find the link Library/internetplugins?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

- you can download DvD's directly in iTunes: look in iTunes settings.

- Rim: probably a leftover of an old installation, you go here in Finder:

MacintoshHD click the disk in the left navigation panel, on the right you see a number of folders, then click the folder called Library, when it opens you will see folders again, click the folder with the name LaunchAgents, in there delete the file with rim in the name (com.rim....),

---------I write this as MacintoshHD / Library / LaunchAgents/-----------

then In

MacintoshHD / Library / LaunchDaemons/ folder there is another one to delete.

Then empty the trash bin.

- we forget a moment about the Hosts file: if you did it you would remember it is not that easy, we will check that later.

- InternetPlugins: MacintoshHD / InternetPlugins/ (written as above).

- Trusteer, is crapware, does not do anything for you, but crippling the OS. Sometimes advised by "someone" at a Bank who does fall for the "trust..." part in the name.

Lex,

Not sure if you know this or not, but VLC does not play everything and sometimes, depending on the video code wrapper, doesn't play some video very well, either.

My own experiences with VLC player over the years is that, at least for me, doesn't play a lot of formats that I want to watch or need to work to be able to watch. Most times, I only get the audio and NO video.

Flip4Mac works great for Windows WMV and WMA files. I have never had an issue with this app/plugin.

VLC many times doesn't cut it for playing these types of files. Same goes for DivX video files.

A dedicated DivX plugin/app works much better for these types of video files, too!

MIcrosoft Silverlight is needed plugin if you watch Netflix on your Mac.

You, also need to completely uninstall all Google apps per the instruction on Google's website.

Currently, Google's assortment of apps, especially, Chrome and Drive aren't playing well in OS X Mavericks.

Uninstall these until Google has made and announced an "official" fix for these.

If you are not a big fan of Apple's Safari, try using Mozilla Firefox as an alternative web browser.

Mozilla group always updates Firefox and there is, currently, an update for Mavericks.

Hi Michel,

You do not run Mavericks I guess (Flip4Mac).

VLC used by everone here, plays the Windows formats perfectly. In all the OSX from Leopard to Mavericks.

DivX is what I call superfluous, but harmless and maybe in rare cases an addition to VLC.

Silverlight is not working well in Mavericks, several experiences here.

Google apps: the OP is running SL, I don't think he uses these. But a good warning to not set aside...

I agree with you completely on Chrome (a notorious memoryleaker), Firefox OK (Opera too, you need the Bookmarks Manager extension there).

I run Mavericks when I do not need to run Snow Leopard.

Silverlight in Mavericks is working fine on my 2009 iMac.

I use it to occasionally watch Netflix on my Mac when I am in my home design work space. Either working of doing other things where I am away from the main flat screen TV in my home.

Haven't noticed any issues with the Silverlight plugin or Netflix on Mavericks since I installed Mavericks when it first came out.

Do not know if the 10.9.2 release has caused an issue, but my iMac is still on OS X 10.9.1 currently running and things seen OK with Netflix. Hopefully, I am not just a minority of users not having this issue.

I use Mavericks right now for occasional use and to test out how well my workflow will be once I decide to make a permanent switch over to Mavericks.

I still rely quite heavily on Snow Leopard.

I haven't install the new Flip4Mac plugin for Mavericks, if there is one, so I cannot answer to that, as yet.

I keep having issues with VLC.

I have a bunch of older WMV movie files on my Mac and none of them seem to want to display the video.

Only the audio. Same in either SL or Mavericks.

Maybe my VLC version needs yet another update.
