Doesn't anyone know a friendly developer who can help us fix this as Apple seems to be pointedly ignoring those of us who can't work with those teeny tiny dots-o-colour.

No developer can fix this, not natively in OS X anyway. It's something Apple would have to do.

Eric, unless I've misunderstood the question, I believe that Akosh is referring to the change from the earlier Labels functionality where it entirely colored folders to the current Tags where it's only a colored dot.

XtraFinder will give you your labels back, and much more -- like auto resize columns.
