setting up WD mycloud w/ airport router

I cannot get my airport extream to open a direct connection to my WD my cloud drive. I can only get it to open a relay connection which is extreanly slow. I have tried to map ports I have enabled NAT. What am I missing?

Can someone help. My old Linksys router was much easier to setup custom permissions. It seem that the premium for apple hardware mean no custom setups allowed.

I currently do not have one of these WD drives but am interested in it myself, so hopefully I can assist you.

Are you attempting to access the WD My Cloud Personal Cloud from a Mac on your local network or from a remote location? Which exact version of the AirPort Extreme do you have?

Did you initially set up your drive using the Online Setup Installer or without it? Did you configure the drive's Network Mode for DHCP or Static?

Finally, what exactly do you mean by "direct" vs. "relay" connection?

I am currently using a Macbook Air. The drive is setup as DHCP. I have set up IP address reservations for my Macbook and the MyCloud drive in the airport utility. I did use the online installer for setup. I have the 802.11ac Airport Extream. All of my hardware was purchased in mid October 2013. except for the MyCloud which I purchased last week. In the WD utility looking at connection it has a message that says "relay connection established" for best performance enable UPnP. or open ports Http 80 and Https 443. after attempting to map the ports within the airport utility which only allows for UDP and TCP ports, I recieve a message in the WD Utlity Cannot connect to ports. relay connection established. I must be missing something?

In the WD utility looking at connection it has a message that says "relay connection established" for best performance enable UPnP. or open ports Http 80 and Https 443.

Unfortunately, the AirPort base stations do not support UPnP which allows for certain applications to automatically open firewall ports for access to the Internet.

Your option was to open the firewall ports manually by assigning them a port mapping, also known as port forwarding.

In this case, you would want to make the following settings in the AirPort Utility for the port mapping of the WD My Cloud:

  • Service: You can ignore this setting. Once you start entering the port values it will automatically change to "Custom..."
  • Public TCP Port(s): 80,443
  • Public UDP Port(s): leave blank
  • Private IP Address: This is the IP address that you assigned the WD My Cloud using the DHCP Reservation.
  • Private TCP Port(s): 80,443
  • Private UDP Port(s): leave blank

Hi Tesserax,

I just bought WD Mycloud 3tb 5 days ago & did all the set up sucessfuly. I manage to aceess my personal cloud with no problem until yesterday. It seems that the remote access failed when I open from my cloud dashboard.

Now the problem is I can't connect (turn on) the remote access anymore. It always failed. I'm using Macbook air with MAC OS X 10.9.2 & my router is Airport Extreme MB763ZP/A Model A1301.

I'm not an advance mac user therefore could you explain again how to do port mapping/forwarding?

Thanks..

I did provide the steps for port mapping a few replies up from this one to jnbec4ever. Did you need additional assistance? If so you may want to start a new post and describe both your current network setup and what you have attempted so far. Please include the make & model of each piece of your networking hardware (routers, modems, etc.) Also will you be administering the base station from a Mac or PC?

No port issues here, at least not that I am aware of, but I did purchase a WD My Cloud drive two days ago and set it up using the installation software from WD and connected it without any issues on my old MacBook Pro (early 2008), but I cannot connect to it with my new MacBook Pro. By connecting I mean a Wi-Fi connection on my home network. I thought it might be a problem with my old Time Capsule, so I purchased a new AirPort Time Capsule and still have the same issue as with the old TC. I'm using the default settings on both my new AirPort and both MBPs. I'm begining to believe the problem is with my new MBP network card. As I also have trouble syncing Wi-Fi App data (iBank) with my iPad and iPhone. The drive cannot be found using the WD setup software, nor does it show up in finder as a shared device. Any recommendations?

Hello Tesserax,

I am having the same problems and your solution did not work for me.

This is my setup:

Arris TM602A cable modem -> Airport Extreme (V7.6.4) -> WD My Cloud (V04.01.01-413)

Administrated by MacBookPro 13" Retina with Yosemite.

I reserved IP 10.0.1.4 for the WDMyCloud and PortForwarding using ports 9080 and 9443.

Obviously in both the MyCloud and Airport Extreme.

I keep on getting the WD MyCloud connection in relay and when I do a port checking, they are both closed.

I also have a CCTV camera with port forwarding and that works just fine.

Breaking my head, but not able to solve this myself.

Any suggestions please?

Thank you

Frans

Hello jnbec4ever,

I had the same problema and solved a few weeks ago.

The way to do it is:

In Airport Utility you have first to Make a IP reservation:

Edit>Advance Settings > DHCP and NAT >Reservations > New Reservation > By MAC address

Input WD Cloud MAC address > Select a IPv4 IP address for the WD Cloud

Go back > Port Adjustments > New Entry > Choose IPv4 > Select a Service > Choose Access to a remote folder

Description input whatever you like,

Port UDP Public input 80

Port TCP Public input 80

IP address, input the one used in Reservations

Port UDP Private input 80

Port TCP Private input 80

Go back and Select New Entry again and do the same steps using 443 in all the ports as you did in the previous steps.

You will end up with a New Reservation and two different entries in Port Adjustements

OK everything and let the Airport Extreme reboot..

Then Go to WD MyCloud Control Panel > Settings > Network > Network Services, choose Static and input the IP you selected

in the Aiport Extreme.

Then Go to Settings > General > Cloud Access > Configure, select Manual, for External Port 1 use 80 and for External Port 2 use 443, then sabe..

After you saved all the settings, UNPLUG THE WDMYCLOUD FROM THE POWER LINE, wait a couple of minutes and then plug it again, it will reboot and it will be working fine and if you go to WDMyCloud > settings > General > Cloud Access, you will see Port forwarding connection established.

It is very important that you unplug and reboot the Cloud, this way it will use the settings you selected.

I hope this help you, let me know.
