I have an old macbook that I'm trying to get photos off of. When I save them on an external hard drive to move them over, my new macbook can't read the files.

I am thinking about buying iPhoto 9.5.1, but I'm wondering if that will replace my old photo library completely? Will I lose my photos and will I be able to convert them to my newer macbook pro? Thank you for your help!

It will not replace your Library. It will need to be updated to run with the newer version, which iPhoto will do automatically when you run it first time. Thereafter you continue to use iPhoto as always.

Of course, before updating anything on a computer back up first
