Q: Updating software problems

Have tried to update OS X Maverick and it's saying hard drive cannot be repaired and to back up and reset but I can't get to see any of my files to back up, anyone have any ideas please?

    EndlessCheese,

if you have an external bootable drive, you can use Startup Manager to boot from the external drive, and copy the files from your internal drive to your external drive.

If you have access to a second Mac with a FireWire 800 port and a FireWire 800 cable, you can boot your Mac in Target Disk mode so that the second Mac can treat your Mac as an external drive, and copy the files from your internal drive to the second Mac.
