Cannon MF4890DW can't scan from OSX?

Bought this all-in-one today. Everythign works fine from Mavericks except the scanning. OS knows there is a scanner but whenever I hit overview I get this error:

Open to suggestions. Not sure if its a Cannon or Mavericks issue so came here first. I have the latest drivers installed from Cannon for both the printer and scanner.

I didnt, but I do now and now the scanner window just comes up blank

By default, the Scan Mode is set to Flatbed. If you don't have a document sitting on the platen glass, then you will get a blank scan. So either move the document to the platen glass or change the Scan Mode in Image Capture to Document Feeder.

With regards to MF Toolbox not working, you need to configure the application to use the networked MF. Open MF Toolbox and click on MF Toolbox and then select Network Scanner Settings...

From the next window that appears, click the plus button

The MF4890dw should appear in the Add Network Scanner list as shown below

If it does, click Add. The window above will close and return to the Network Scanner window and will now list the MF4800 Series as shown below. Quit this window.

The last step is to select Scanner from the MF Toolbox menu and select the MF4800 Series.

The MF Toolbox window will now appear and let you scan. Remember that you need to have Scan > Remote Scanner selected on the MF.

Hey Solomani,

I'm considering the purchase of a Cannon MF4780w. My main question is about the scanning software from the Mac side; is it featured enough so that one can name the file and chose the stored location from the software, for each scan? I'm coming from a Brother machine, and while there are enough problems to warrant the change, the UI is well done.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the late reply, as I was on holidays for the last 3 weeks. You can select where to save and what to name the files but as far as I know it just iterates a number at the end of the file-name like the default OSX scanner does.

Having said that there maybe a way to do it I am not aware of but since I have never had a need to do it I haven't checked. Go ahead and contact Cannon support I found them to be responsive and helpful when I first had issues.

Thank you for the reply.

What I've learned is that the scanning interface is actually a part of the Mac OS (though of course the Canon drivers are still needed), and fortunately not device dependent. And of courses the settings matter as they've already been detailed in the thread here. But everything is working as I hoped. :-)

thanks again gain for the reply.

Dear Pahu,

I also have recently bought a Canon MF4890dw and tried to follow the above steps however, the printer does not appear under Bonjour when I tried to add it through the MF Toolbox's Network Scanner Settings. I have reinstalled the drivers, restarted the laptop and the printer but still nothing.

Although I can scan from the Canon Printer's keys and store it into my laptop by USB, multiple pages are scanned into individual files, unlike when using the MF Toolbox. Really annoying.

What else can I do? I have a Macbook Air on OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks). Is upgrading to Lion an option? I haven't because there don't seem to be much difference between the two.

WIll appreciate the help!

If the printer is networked but not appearing under the Bonjour selection of the Add Network Scanner window then you have the option of selecting the IP icon and then manually entering the IPv4 address being used by the MF4890dw.

Assuming that Bonjour was also not working when you added the printer, I expect that you would have needed to add the printer by selecting the IP icon in the Add printer window and then entering the IPv4 address of the MF. If this was the case, then you will already know the IP address being used by the MF.

Since you mention USB here are you saying that you normally have the MF networked but when you need to scan you connect it to the Mac via USB? Or do you mean the MF is always connected to the Mac via USB? I ask because the Add Network Scanner setting shown above is only used when the MF is networked. So if the MF is not networked and connected via USB cable then you do not use the Add Network Scanner function of the MF Toolbox application. Instead, the MF should automatically appear under the Scanner menu.

If you mean Yosemite (OS X 10.10) rather than Lion (which is 10.7 and not considered an upgrade) then there is still an issue with Bonjour for some Yosemite users so this won't resolve your issue. But if you do have the MF connected via USB cable rather than networked then Bonjour is not your issue and upgrading is not required.
