Hi. What is the difference between passcode and password?

I just noticed on the left side of my settings menu, "Passcode" and now I'm confused. Is it asking for the password to unlock my ipad or is it asking for a password that I use for downloading? I tried to enter my password (used for unlocking my ipad) cause I was trying to change my password. I don't know the difference...help!
