what is the process "AgentMonitor" that i can see running when I bring up the activity monitor?

When i bring up activity monitor there is a process running called AgentMonitor. I cannot find any information about it doing a web search, I do have Mcafee Internet Security as provided by BT for MACs, but that has only recently been installed. The scan does not bring anything up though.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), operating system now 10.9.2

I doubt it. There are other places where processes can be started, and vtech is probably using that capability. For example, processes can be launched via ~/Library/LaunchAgents . If you paste that path (including the tilde, which means "home directory") in the Finder, Go, Go to Folder dialog box you can see what is inside. Another possibility is /Library/LaunchAgents (without the tilde - a system wide launcher).
