If it doesn't, then it would seem that you erroneously purchased a Verizon-model iPhone, which can only be used with Verizon. Return the iPhone for a refund and buy a GSM model. You'll need an unlocked model or one locked to the carrier you wish to use, and getting a phone that is truly unlocked can be difficult when dealing with used devices as many sellers lie.
