Lost Firefox icon

New user here so don't laugh. I bought my iMac last Friday and I shut it down for the first time last night. When I restarted it this morning the icon for Firefox was gone from the Dock and desktop and I wasn't connected to the net (I have cable access). I found the Firefox .dmg file and after a few clicks everything was normal. How can I lock the icon in place and automatically reestablish an internet connection when I restart the computer? Thanks.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

When you double-click the .dmg disk image to mount it, that virtual disk remains mounted until you eject it or restart the computer. You had Firefox running from the locked disk image. Mount the disk image and drag the Firefox application icon on top of the Applications folder in your Home folder. You can them eject the mounted .dmg disk image. Then open the Applications folder and drag the Firefox icon onto the Dock. That will put a link in the Dock to the Firefox copy on the hard drive.

You may want to look for a copy of David Pogue's OS X: The Missing Manual (Tiger edition); it's probably the single most-recommended guide for new users and switchers.

jaydblu,

Did you initially drag the Firefox icon onto the Applications folder in your Dock to begin with? That's where the actual Firefox application should reside. The Applications folder is a folder with a stylized "A" on it near the far right side of your Dock. Once the Firefox app is in the Applications folder, you can open that folder and double click on Firefox. That will open the Firefox browser and place a Firefox icon in your Dock to the LEFT of that little vertical divider line. Those icons on the left side of the vertical divider are kind of like aliases or shortcuts to the actual application. In order to keep the icon there, one way to do it is to simply click on it once and hold and then drag it out of the Dock (don't let go of the mouse) and then put it back in. You may see a little puff of smoke, but don't worry about it. Alternatively, you can just click and hold on the icon in the Dock and select "keep in Dock" from the popup menu.

Steve M.
