backupd Time Machine caught burning cpu high CPU usage

Hey guys, I have a MBP mid 2012, running latest mavericks.

Sometimes when I run my timemachine backup, the backupd, mds, mds_stores CPU usage go through the roof to the point the machine is un usable until done.

I even see in the console this message sometimes when it occurs:

process backupd caught burning CPU!

backupd hit 100% cpu when that occured.

It has happened numerous times, sometimes I have almost no CPU power left due to backup.

Other times, it backs up with not much fuss.

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?

Here is a samply of the CPU monitor:

Also when this happens, I get icon loading issues / lag like such:

User uploaded file

Notice how snagit and tor have a default icon?

it later fixes itself:

User uploaded file

And in my app folder...

User uploaded file

This seems to correspond with the icons:

edit: A bit more info added

OS X Mavericks (10.9)
