Q: Why can't I close my OpenOffice? Getting error code 1712.

I open OpenOffice last night a couple times and had no issues closing it except once. I got the colorful spinning wheel and eventually had to just shutdown. I then downloaded Mavericks (which took like 3-4 hours) and when I went to install it, it told me I had to shut all programs down. It tried and I tried numerous times to shut it down, but I only receive the error code. No files will open and the program won't open or shutdown. How do I fix it? I've got an appointment for the Genious Bar on Saturday because I think I have a ton of issues with this laptop. This Mac is only 4 months old so I'm not impressed with Mac so far.
