Try restoring the document from the most recent backup you made of it.

Pages used to make backups... It does no longer... I cannot even revert to a previous version not being able to open the document that I was still working on half an hour ago. Thank heavens, I made a copy by selecting all text and copying it into an email when the problem first occurred yesterday evening. I am now working on it as an email. I can't risk loosing text this way anymore thru Pages. This is very bad. I am truly disappointed by this... particularly having moved from MS Office to iWorks!

No matter what program you use, the possibility to lose data is always there. That's why backups are essential.

Working on it in an email won't protect you from data loss. Backup and save copies regularly.

    Hmmm...

Of course, you are right... in the old world.

However, in the cloud, one should simply not loose anything...

Remembering the inspiring demos about versions of documents, going back endlessly in time....

    Hmmm...

If you think like that you will be very disappointed (like now)

Time Machine is a backup system, iCloud is not!

Who say's? What if your internet connection drops during file transfer and corrupts the file? What if you have a weak password, hackers get into your account and delete your data? What if you accidentally delete your data?

There are lots of possibilities to lose data. Saving copies in multiple locations is a simple way to avoid that.

This is all nonsense guys and you know it. Backing up a corrupted file is useless. The problem is with Apple. I could not open the document on my iPad either. Neither could I save the file when working on the icloud based version of Page using Safari. To prevent problems, I started running Page thru Safari but, that too, in vain. Someone needs to do their homework here. And that someone probably works in Palo Alto ;-)

The nonsense is that you do not care about your data enough to back it up.

The file is on your Mac, in ~/library/mobile documents. But that copy may also be corrupted by now, a backup copy would have saved your butt but .......

Could this be evidence of a virus?

No, just evidence of someone not taking care to backup their files.

The issue here is not one of backups (though, of course, you must back up anything you don't want to lose), but why Pages suddenly will not allow you to save or open that file. Is Pages behaving this way with only that one file, or is it misbehaving in a more general fashion?

You may have corruption that is causing the problem. Try repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.

Pages is behaving only this way with that one file... for the moment. But, I think, you are right. My disk is probably the problem indeed. It served me well during nearly 5 years. Can't complain about that. I am verifying the disk permissions, now... (I have verified the disk but that did not show any issues.)

I probably need to look for a replacement for my MacBook (4Gb Int Mem). Thinking of a 13 inch MacBook Air but would ideally like to wait for larger sized iPod. Any suggestions?
