This is not true. For RAW formats, Apple delivers updates to OS X that bring the RAW support.
Of course, you can use manufacturer-supplied raw converters, or other photography software that can do it, but if you want OS X support (so you can view the files in Finder, or edit them in iPhoto or Aperture), then Apple needs to offer this update.
Apple rarely (ever?) announces when they will support new camera raw formats before they release it, so the answer to this question is "nobody knows" but requesting it via OS X feedback as EZ Jim suggests is the best approach.
