I now know that the installation of FCE 4 can kill off Aperture 3.5 and the recommended cure is to reinstall Mavericks but I'd prefer a quicker and less drastic solution if there is one.
Anybody know of a simpler alternative?

You can dig through your backups of the OS and pullout the relevant files but honestly the quickest, easiest and safest thing to do is just reinstall the OS

Thanks, I just updated my existing OS X 10.9.1 to 10.9.2 thinking that would do the job, but it didn't.
Looks like I will have to reinstall from my original (saved) 10.9 .dmg ..... should be quicker than downloading from the App store.
I don't know how re-installing from the DNG is faster, because you'll then have to download and install the 10.9.2 update. If you do a download/install from the MAS you'll go straight to 10.9.2, as that's what downloads now.
You could also use the 10.9.2 combo updater from OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo)

I would like to use the smallest download as my broadband is capped and I don't want to make huge downloads if at all possible.
As I'm already on 10.9.2 could I still use the combo update?
Yes the combo updater is actually the complete OS not just the changes. It will be big but will guarantee you get the whole system

I've just downloaded the 10.9.2 combo update and it's only 860MB compared to the standard 10.9.2 update which is 769MB.
I can't envisage it containing the whole OS which must be around 5GB?
Anyway I can reinstall from my 10.9 .dmg and then apply the combo unless I throw caution to the wind and download the full 10.9.2 from the App Store.
Just reread what I wrote and realize I mis-wrote. The combo update has all the updates not the whole OS.
So in this case the combo update contains all the changes include in both 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 where the 10.9.2 update only has the change since 10.9.1
