i am trying to sync my 16gb iphone5 to my macbook pro and itunes says i do not have enough available space on my computer. i have 297gb free so i do not know how this is possible. please help with any ideas

Are you sure that it's saying that you don't have enough space on the computer, and not that it's saying you don't have sufficient space on the iPhone?
yes i am sure here is exactly what it says "Itunes could not back up the iphone james's iphone because not enouh free space is available on this computer"

i already tried emptying my trash and theres really no files for me to delete i have 297gb free.
Maybe we have too much space available and we should try adding files. Yes...I have the same problem. I susspect it may be OS X version related. What OS version are you running on your Mackbook Pro?
(I only have 200GB available...but I can't backup my 32GB from my phone -- similar to your problem..only yours is more laughable since you have almost 20 times the necessary space.
