I cannot complete the setup of my gmail account with the mail app on my mac?

I was having connectivity problems with the mail application and was not receiving email from my gmail account as I regularly did. I deleted the gmail account and tried to re-install it but now it will not load my gmail account info in the mail app. I keep getting the error: "There was a problem setting up the account. An unknown error occured."

PLEASE HELP?
