Q: Why won't my new Mac mini work with an HP display?

I currently use a 2007 Mac mini with an HP display. Earlier this year, I bought a new Mac mini, but the connector that came with it wouldn't fit with the HP display. So I ordered a display connector of the required type (HDMI to VGA) through Amazon. When the new connector arrived, I attached it to the new Mac mini and the HP display, but nothing appeared on the screen. I tried again with a borrowed Gateway display, but again nothing appeared on the screen.

I then took my new Mac mini to the home of a relative, to whom I had given my old Apple Cinema Display (I used it with my G4 Power Mac). I hooked up the computer there, and the setup screens appeared as they should have. My question is: Do I need to buy a new Apple display in order to use my new Mac mini, or is there a way I can use my existing HP display?
