Mar 24, 2014 2:36 PM in response to Mac Jetby sivarTB,try: http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html if you haven't already

Mar 27, 2014 9:17 AM in response to sivarTBby tchufnagel,I am having the same problem and looked at the (excellent) Pondini Time Machine web site, but the directions given don't seem to apply to this particular problem because the disk image does not appear to be mounted in the Finder even though Time Machine complains that it (the disk image) is in use. So there does not appear to be any way to unmount the disk image, at least not from the Finder.

Mar 27, 2014 9:29 AM in response to tchufnagelby Grant Bennet-Alder,In summary, what Pondini suggests is:
1) Make sure you have the latest Airport Utility and use it to Install the latest Base Station firmware.
2) check each of your Macs and be sure the drive is not still mounted on any of them.
3) Restart your Base Station to correct the mistaken notion that the drive is still mounted and in use.

Mar 27, 2014 9:29 AM in response to tchufnagelby BDAqua,Hi, see if it shows here...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
If it does contain data...

Mar 27, 2014 10:29 AM in response to BDAquaby tchufnagel,Thanks for the suggestion. The volume in question does show up in /Volumes, and I can eject it using the Finder. If I then try to connect via Time Machine, the backup volume appears in /Volumes but immediately Time Machine complains with the "disk image is in use" error. There are no duplicates (e.g. with "1" or "2" appended) that I can see.

Mar 27, 2014 10:31 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby tchufnagel,Thanks, but I am not using Airport to connect and the volume in question is not on a Time Capsule. It's a networked volume hosted on a local server running Mac OS X Server.

Mar 27, 2014 10:42 AM in response to tchufnagelby BDAqua,See if Spotlight is trying to index it.
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, see if you see mds, find, or fsck as processes.

Jan 7, 2015 12:25 PM in response to Mac Jetby EJD72,I received a similar message and after turning time machine off and then on failed to fix the problem, I powered down the time capsule, powered it back up, caused a backup and all was good. Not a "sophisticated" solution, but it seemed to work (this time).

Feb 1, 2015 5:10 AM in response to EJD72by alberti-nl,I did something like EJD72, - I restarted my Mac, after which the disk was unloadable but the solution did not last.
I found this support page: AirPort Time Capsule: Time Machine backups may not mount; "Backup volume cannot be found" may appear - Apple Support, and that automatically installed a new update: AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.6.4.
I had to start the backup again and this went successfully through two cycles. So I'm confident it stays.
How it started? I think I stopped my Mac while it was in the middle of a backup. No t sure though.

Jan 3, 2016 2:27 PM in response to Mac Jetby woody0228,I corrected the issue by disabling the wireless network on Time Capsule, which I am not using at all. I had to reset the Time Capsule the other day and apparently the default settings enabled the wireless network, or tried to. Extremely frustrating, spent hours
