I'm receiving an error message that reads "The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use. The time capsule is not backing up any files.

The Time Machine is not completing thte backup to my Time Capsule. I am receiving a message which reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Mac Jet's iMAC.sparsebundle" is already in use." I cannot locate the source of the problem or what steps need to be taken to get the Time Capsule operating.

I am having the same problem and looked at the (excellent) Pondini Time Machine web site, but the directions given don't seem to apply to this particular problem because the disk image does not appear to be mounted in the Finder even though Time Machine complains that it (the disk image) is in use. So there does not appear to be any way to unmount the disk image, at least not from the Finder.

In summary, what Pondini suggests is:

1) Make sure you have the latest Airport Utility and use it to Install the latest Base Station firmware.

2) check each of your Macs and be sure the drive is not still mounted on any of them.

3) Restart your Base Station to correct the mistaken notion that the drive is still mounted and in use.

Hi, see if it shows here...

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

If it does contain data...

Thanks for the suggestion. The volume in question does show up in /Volumes, and I can eject it using the Finder. If I then try to connect via Time Machine, the backup volume appears in /Volumes but immediately Time Machine complains with the "disk image is in use" error. There are no duplicates (e.g. with "1" or "2" appended) that I can see.

I did something like EJD72, - I restarted my Mac, after which the disk was unloadable but the solution did not last.

I found this support page: AirPort Time Capsule: Time Machine backups may not mount; "Backup volume cannot be found" may appear - Apple Support, and that automatically installed a new update: AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.6.4.

I had to start the backup again and this went successfully through two cycles. So I'm confident it stays.

How it started? I think I stopped my Mac while it was in the middle of a backup. No t sure though.

I'm receiving an error message that reads "The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use. The time capsule is not backing up any files.
