Q: audio files and duplicates question.

Hello Group,

After almost seven years my  Macbook pro is getting full., I have been using Omnidisksweeper to help locate files that are no longer needed. I have always been confused as to where My music files are kept. If I import audio files using Itunes, it seems I am creating duplicates, even if I name them, I seem to have an untitled artist or untitled album remaining, is this true?  The same question applies to Iphoto where are these Jpegs or digital photos kept? are files duplictaed when using these applications?

thanks in advance

Troy

Audio files should be in the iTunes Media folder. iPhoto images are located Pictures > iPhoto Library (control click Show Package Contents).

If you are adding tracks by dragging to iTunes or by using the Add To Library menu item then iTunes will put a copy into your media folder and leave the original where it is.  iTunes uses the copy.  If you add by dragging to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder then iTunes moves the file to the media folder.

I almost understand. If I delete photos within Iphoto and empty is trash its= gone? unless I had imported from another folder non I photo folder first. Regarding audio files, An example could be I am given cd of inerviews, ( work related) I make a folder of its own, not in Itunes. But when I click to play the audio files Itunes copies it in order to play it? Thanks again. and does this also occur with photos regarding I photos. Sorry if I am not clear I appreciate your help.

Yes, if you use iTunes normal settings then if you play a file with iTunes it will add a copy of that file to the media library folder.  There are ways to get around this but with what you are doing you are likely ending up with two copies.

I don't use iPhoto so I can't answer about that.

If you import photos from a folder and don't delete the folder, then you will have two sets, one in iphoto, and one in the folder.

When you delete photos from iPhoto they go in to iPhoto trash, when you empty that trash can, they end up in the main trash can (the one in the dock).
