After using migration assistant ( PC to Mac), the system seems to stall/ stopp saying there is less than a minute to go, but then nothing happens. I left my iMac overnight but still no result. Any ideas?

Not to commiserate, but I am having a very similar problem, but its Mac to Mac. It would be nice if Apple moderated these forums and actually attempted to help us all out.
Considering this is an iPad forum, you wouldn't get much help with a PC or Mac problem...
The migration assist is a disaster.
Set up your new computer with setup assistant.

It suggests using migration after setup. It just doesn't work well. Move selected information
I realised my miskate as soon as I posted, but thank you for pointing out the error. I realise now that the migration assistant isn't perhaps what it claims to be. I've solved the problem via a more traditional process of file transfer.
