How do I delete "Other" in files storage?

I am having some serious issues trying to delete the "other" iles from my mac book Pro. There does not seem to be any simple way to do this. Is it something to do with Backups? Apparently this is meant to clear once you backup but mine has not. Please help as I have run out of disc space and cannot clear it.
