After loading the last software update my startup password doesn't work. How do I fix this?

I loaded the latest OS X software and I keep getting an error indication when I put in my password. If I shut it down completely and reboot it goes to a page with my login and guest login. If I click on my picture I enter my computer. I try to reset my password and it doesn't recognize my old password.
