External usb drive for mainstage

Hi guys. Im just wondering if anybody tried an external drive for mainstage. My idea is an external drive. Maybe a 3.0 usb powered hard disk with a fresh install mavericks then boot up from there only when performing. Because for now im using my brothers computer while his away, purposely my idea is not to mess up his internal hard disk.? Need your opinions. Thanks in advance
