Q: slow performance since going to Mavericks on aging iMac

hi & thanks in advance: Wondering if my newly sluggish performance, SPODs etc since upgrading to Mavs (10.9.2) from 10.6.8  =  its time to upgrade my machine (late '07 iMac i think). I'd just install more RAM but seems my 4gig is its ceiling? Activity Monitor shows that now even just running one or 2 apps at a time is pushing things. Ran the nifty EtreCheck (see below).

I'm a Veetle watcher, wondering if their ancient 1.0 mac plugin is no good w/Mavs?

Here's what's happening:

- iPhoto now SPODs for about 30 secs after launch, but then all's well once that stops. (btw when I go offline/disconnect the modem's firewire to test run apps, there's no SPOD-ing.)

- GBand 10, all's fine except when playing live e.guitar getting intermittent glitches in its audio (old Tascam FireOne firewire I/O, no way to update its driver since they abandoned the FireOne ages ago.)

- VERY slow app launches all around, especially after first morning start up. Chrome pages loading 5x slower than before on 10.6.8; some streaming slow downs, esp. on Netflix which takes Silverlight like a minute now to load up a show;

- Activity Monitor: I'm at like 3.5-3.9 of my 4G with just a coupla apps running at a time.

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Disk Utility repair permissions

- reset PRAM (before reading here that's not a good idea anymore)

- did a full Time Machine restore (    "                 "               " )

- disabled all but one start up item, a Native Instruments helper type app I wasn't sure about

- cleared some caches, can't remember which (per a 10-star user here on improving performance)

- Deleted tons of old/unneeded apps and files, my boot drive now less than half full.

- uninstalled several third-party plugins

- thinned out my iPhoto library extensively, still the same SPOD after launch; then reindexed the thumbnails.

- Sophos Anti-Virus Mac Home, turned off all realtime updating/scanning (left its web page/content realtime filter on though)

Here's my EtreCheck info, & again thanks in advance for anyone's help here!!!

That will slow your browser a bit, but should not be causing overall slowing.

I say "should not" because when something went wrong with my Sophos installation I found that it was posting never ending system.log entries that suddenly brought my iMac to it's knees. Running the uninstaller and then re-installing took care of it.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    I disagree with MadMacs.

Completely unistall Sophos Antivirus per the instructions on the develiper's website.

Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X can cause adverse effects on the system as well as negatively impact OS X performance.

Plus, AV software on OS X is not necessary.

If interested see this article on malware and antivirus apps on OS X.

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1982

Also, You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.

Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins and extensions, also.

Also, if you have any third party devices, like keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to go to the device makers' websites' to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions.

How so? Nothing you had to say countered my advise and beside I agree with almost everything you had to say.

Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X can cause adverse effects on the system as well as negatively impact OS X performance.

I would agree that most users who have A-V software have do not use it in the same way that I do. I have five A-V software applications installed and none of them slow down anything since there are no active processes associated with any of them until I choose to launch them for testing malware samples that I come across. You said it "can slow down" and that can be correct with some packages if you don't take steps to prevent it. The OP has told us that he took appropriate steps to disable Sophos active scanning and updates, so it's not obvious to me that it's causing any issues. Hopefully Linc's request will allow us all to have a better idea of what's going on.

Plus, AV software on OS X is not necessary.

But then you go on to recommend thomas_r's tip sheet and you will never hear him say those words. In fact a recent article leans in the opposite direction Time to re-evaluate safety of Mac OS X.

I missed some of what the OP wrote, so I re-read it just to make sure.

    So, my bad on that.

Thomas Reed must have recently edited his posting there as at one point, I thought he mentions the use or actually non-use of Antivirus on OS X, but still advises Antivirus for users who are still running Windows software on their Macs.

I will have to go back and re-read his link to see if he did, in fact, make changes to his topic there.

Thanks for  the head up on this

I'm sure Linc will be along shortly and hopefully be able to tell you what's up with Kerberos, but in the meantime I'll point out a couple of things.

What version of iLife are you using? Your iPhoto should have updated to 9.5.1 after you installed Mavericks and the Console entries would certainly have me believe you are using something older.

Although 4GB of RAM are listed as the minimum required for Mavericks I get the distinct feeling from other users in the forum that more is better, if not mandatory. I started with only 4GB on my 2011 iMac using Mountain Lion and I realized almost immediately that I needed more. I suspect a new laptop with minimal needs can get by with only 4, but for users that are into iPhoto and Garage Band, I don't think that's anywhere near enough.

Is this computer bound to an Open Directory server? If you don't know what I mean, the answer is almost certainly no, but open the Users & Groups preference pane, click Login Options, and look for the words Network Account Server at the bottom of the window.

sorry to bog ya down with all these Linc....is it normal for Console to show so many errors? Its constantly scrolling with 'em, including this one I noticed mentioning Sophos (I have its realtime check/update off, but still have its dangerous web page protection rolling in realtime):

    3/17/14 6:15:30.677 PM SophosWebD[66]: <SMENode: 0x7ffaf3c8f430> localNode csc:1ERROR! encountered an error while writing to outputstream| error:Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=32 "The operation couldn’t be completed. Broken pipe"

(there was five of the same as above following it at one point)

Sophos is useless, and you should get rid of it whether it's causing this problem or not. If you still have problems after doing that and rebooting, post again.
