KeystationPro88 Controller Assingments (Again): FAO mattrixx & muzak & ...

Hi Guys...

We were discussing Controller Assignments for the Keystation Pro 88 a week or so ago, in this thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2862106#2862106

muzak, you suggested in response to my problem of Logic retaining 'Learnt' assignments that I save the Assignments straight away.

How do I do this?

Do you mean save a blank song template with the assignments in it, or isthere a way of saving the assignments as a discrete file? I cant figure out at all how to do this. Saving as an Arrange template straight after exiting 'Learn' mode does not seem to solve the problem for me... Logic still doesnt reatin the learnt assignments.

Am I missing something?

Cheers,

S.

Does your setup change regularly? ie Do you disconnect other USB midi devices?

I came across this problem a long time ago. I have several controllers (UMX25, Trigger finger, Pro88, AMT8 etc) and when you disconnect one of them, the order of devices gets messed up and the controller assignments are all screwed.

For example, I have a whole bunch of functions assigned to the buttons of my UMX25 and I used to add a BCF2000 on occasion, to my setup for some additional faders.... this would in turn make all my set assignments on the UMX all dissappear.

Could it be, that something like this is happening in your case?

To make it doubly confusing... If you use the normal midi assignments in the Key Commands window and not the learn controller assignments, you can actualy achieve some global assignments, with some caveats.
This will allow you to assign, for example, 'next plugin setting' to Prog change button 8.... and it will work for all controllers sending that command.

It's all a bit hit or miss, until you get a real handle on what is happenning.

Ultimately, it would be ideal, if unplugging, or turning off a usb midi device, left things alone, but it just doesn't!

Thanks for your response mattrixx.

Keystation88 is my sole controller. Only other device is my FA66 F/W interface. No other USB connections.

The thing is... the learnt assignments are lost the minute I exit learn mode. Instantly.

For example... I assign the bottom row of pots to Audio 1-8 Volume, Sliders Audio Insrument 1-8 Volume. I do this in learn mode; clicking on fader in Logic Window, then moving the Pro88 controller. The onscreen info in the controller assignment window indicates they are being assigned as intended.

I click 'Exit' learn mode. I go to use one of the faders.... they are all inoperative. The pots stay assigend... but appear to lose their assignments rapidly.... until only bottom left pot is accuratley assigned to Audio 1 volume.

What puzzles me is that whichever pot I turn afer that... it alters the volume on whatever track is selected in arrange. I'm sure I'm missing something. Muzak mentioned saving the assignments straight away... but I can't work out how to do this.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

S.

Ah, ha, whas up Steve,
I think maybe there's something you're missing; when you enter the learn mode the button is enabled. That far you've gotten, now when you exit from the learn process don't hit the learn button again or your assignments will be deleted just close the window. All I meant about saving is the entire file. Getting logic to use a different track then the one selected seems to be impossible unless you select them all/moved by the same controller.

If none of this is news then you may want to take a look at the thread you originally started, when I brought that back up it was because my Ozonic has some buttons completely unusable.

Alright!
I know that one is kind of like, duh, why does it have to be like that. Now you should be able to get into the key commands via the preferences menu, there you can assign record/play and such buttons. Personnally I believe it's the Ozonic's incapability, whereas your keyboard should beable to do that, let me know if when you try pushing a transport button, Logic doesn't recognize the key command, then maybe I can look back and decipher what some of the others said in your first post about using the already assigned commands and letting Logic learn them.
Glad you're on your way, best of luck to ya,
muZak

Hey muzak...

Been rolling around in the Key Command hay for a while. Although Logic is recieving MIDI data from the Transport Keys on the pro88 (input showing up in the transport window when keys pressed), in the Global Key Commands (MIDI learn), every other controller button on the Pro88 can be assigned to a global parameter... but it just doesnt recognise the Pro88's Transport buttons at all in the Key Command Learn mode..... hmmmmmm......

In the end I've just assigned transport to some other buttons... thank God there's enough of them!

Hope this info is of use,

Cheers,

Hey mattrixx...

Tried what you suggested ie, turning on MMC reception.... still nothing. On the pro 88 I recalled Logic preset (Recall:8) and default (Recall 10).

Ah well... thnx anyway... Im just happy to be using the controllers now... and to be honest the transport buttons I've assigned are in a better position than the Pro88's dedicated ones anyway!

Cheers,

S.

Stevie, a break-through in kind of a bizarre way,

So it turns out that a default program change had turned off my MIDI transport controls, changing to an unused program let me assign all the buttons in Key commands.

But there's kind of a strange hinging here, in order for the button to work it has to be pressed double, like double clicking the mouse...it's probably the controller and not Logic but at least it's working so you might want to give it a shot. If anyone's got a clue about the double pressing buttons-let me know.

muZAK
