Q: when trying to charge my new ipod nano there is a red light that comes on for just a second, then goes off, is the cable bad?

I purchased  IPOD shuffle for my mom, she plugged it into her computer to recharge and left it there over night.  When she tried to use it again it didn't work and there was no light.  I plugged it into my computer and a red light comes on for a second then goes off.  Is it charging or is the cable bad?

First, make sure the plug on the USB docking cable is completely inserted into the shuffle's headphone jack, as shown in this document

If it's connected properly, the cable is probably OK, since you get that initial red light.  When the shuffle is receiving sufficient power, the light should be blinking amber (orange), or it should be "solid" (not blinking) amber or green.  Blinking amber light means do not disconnect, because the shuffle's disk is mounted by the system (eject before disconnecting).  It never blinks green.  Solid solid means OK to disconnect; solid color indicates battery charge status, amber for charging and green for fully chargedRed indicates an error.

Make sure you are using a direct USB port on the computer, not a USB hub.  If there are other USB devices connected, try it with only the shuffle connected (you can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected if used).  If you happen to have a USB power adapter (plugs into wall power outlet), you can try connecting the shuffle to it.  The goal is to get the shuffle to show something other than that brief red light (or no light), when you connect it to power.

If that does not help, are the two computers you tried laptops?  If so, make sure the laptop's power adapter is connected, so that it is not running on battery power.

Do the two computers have USB 3.0 ports, instead of 2.0?
